A cashier is a person who operates a cash register or similar device for recording transactions and collecting payments from customers in a retail or other establishment. They are responsible for handling cash, checks, and credit/debit card transactions and ensuring that the correct amount of money is received. They may also be responsible for performing other tasks such as bagging items, counting money in the cash drawer, and providing customer service.

Behavioral or situational questions

  • How would you treat a colleague who enters inaccurate figures and does not do their job properly?
  • What would you do if you were having a disagreement with your superior or supervisor? 
  • Describe a situation where you had to work under pressure. What did you do differently that stood out from what others would normally do under the circumstances?
  • Describe a time when you had to make a quick decision in the absence of a superior to obtain permission from (assuming the candidate has worked in a similar role before).
  • Describe a time when you made a decision that you regretted. What would you have done differently, and what lesson did you learn from that experience?

Skill related questions

  • How would you react if a customer requests a refund and you think they are not eligible?
  • You're likely to run into clients who are difficult to get along with. Tell me how you plan to deal with them transparently.
  • How do you plan to stay organized and efficient when dealing with multiple clients and multitasking?
  • You would most likely be doing the same thing every day at work, how do you plan to stay motivated?
  • How would you react to cash discrepancies? What would you do to avoid or minimize this?

General questions

  • Say you’re a hiring director, what skills would you look out for when hiring for this role?
  • What qualities do you think makes a cashier efficient in this role?
  • How well can you use tools that aid in making this role easier? Have you used any?
  • What do you think sets you apart from other candidates applying for this role?
  • Have you done your research about this role? Which aspect do you think would be more challenging for you and why?
