Interview Questions to Hire Operations Manager

Operations managers are in charge of overseeing processes related to manufacturing or service delivery, with a focus on boosting efficiency, productivity, and quality. Keep an eye out for candidates with analytical skills and who are detail-oriented. Avoid those who don't know how to solve problems or lead.

You want to know as much as possible about your candidates during the interview process. Do more than recite their resumes and ask the typical questions like “Tell me about yourself,” “What are your strengths,” and more. There are plenty of other questions that can tell you everything you need to know.

Generic interview questions will not suffice in identifying a top-notch Operations Manager for the organization because these candidates will have significant responsibilities. So, hiring someone with the right expertise and qualifications is critical.

During the interview, keep an eye on candidates with experience in logistics and the ability to work under pressure. Operations executive candidates must be able to deal with operational issues and come up with efficient solutions in a timely manner.

STAR questions can bring out candidates’ responses to interview questions using examples from their previous workplace. 

Below are some questions you can use to gauge their quick thinking and interpersonal skills.

  • What strategy do you use to manage a project?
  • Walk me through the time when you handle a difficult situation with your team.
  • What is an instance of a project involving many teams you oversaw? What happened as a result of how you dealt with that situation?
  • How do you decide which task takes priority when meeting several deadlines?
  • What tactics do you employ when introducing new responsibilities or tasks to members of your team who aren't familiar with them?
  • Describe an instance in which the final results of your team did not meet your early expectations. How did you deal with the situation? How did you explain the situation to management?
  • What do you do when one of your team members disagrees with your decisions or approach?
  • If you had a small budget or a lack of company resources, how would you adapt and face this challenge?

  • What logistics system have you used before?
  • In what ways has your ideas improved the operations in your previous workplace?
  • What information do you look for when analyzing a situation? How do you pinpoint problems and solutions?
  • How do you maintain quality when efficiency and productivity have increased?
  • What method do you use to make a production costs report?
  • How do you work together with the IT department to ensure confidential data is stored in a secure place?
