Employees’ safety, as well as the safety of valuable equipment, is one of each organization's top responsibilities. Furthermore, new norms and guidelines are constantly implemented, and employees must follow them. Companies hire safety inspectors to preserve their assets and avoid expensive fines.

Safety Inspectors will be in charge of examining the company's or organization's facilities, processes, and employees to ensure that they fulfill occupational safety rules. They will also identify risks and identify potential safety concerns before recommending new regulations or changes to existing policies.

Below are sample questions you can use to find out if the candidates really know about their position as a Safety Inspector.

How Well Do Candidates Know About Their Role?

  • What was the reason you wanted to work as a safety inspector?
  • Walk me through what you usually do when you’re doing safety inspections.
  • How do you encourage others to follow your safety measures?
  • What are your reporting procedures?
  • Tell us about EPA guidelines in [specific industry].
  • What are your go-to sources for current regulations?
  • What would you prioritize in your first week of work?
  • What is [e.g. welding] and what dangers does it involve?

Skill Sets Questions

  • Can you walk me through the job safety analysis (JSA) process?
  • What steps would you take to put a Hazard Communication Program in place?
  • How would you go about practicing safe working methods?
  • In your opinion why is it vital to keep registers?
  • Choose one health and safety law and how it can affect an organization?

Encouraging others to follow safety guidelines set by someone is a difficult thing to do. But, if a safety inspector doesn’t make sure all employees are following the guidelines, it could mean people getting hurt and companies getting sued.

Hence, it is important for you as a recruiter or hiring manager to know how your candidates handle such situations. Below are some sample questions on how you can gauge their behavior before you can make a hiring decision.

Behavioral Questions

  • Tell me about a time when you faced the most dangerous violation.
  • What would you do if the situation is too dangerous?
  • If you’ve made a mistake that causes an injury. What would you do?
  • How do you handle rejections from your superior?
  • How do you handle a staff member who ignores your safety regulations?
  • What do you do to balance your personal life and work-life?

Knowing about their role and how to react in different situations are important. But, a Safety Inspector, another aspect of the role that they need to know is critical thinking.

Critical Thinking Questions

  • How would you react if you discovered that certain employees were not wearing personal protective equipment?
  • What would you do if you had an unhappy client at work?
  • Tell me a time when you had to work with others to solve a safety issue.
  • If a workplace is without safety, in your opinion what might happen to the place and the people inside?
  • Why do you think certain access is restricted to a certain area?
