Businesses often need to hire personnel who have strong levels of attention to detail. Having detailed and focused employees can avoid costly errors and ensure that processes are followed and documentation is properly and accurately maintained.

Employees with the skills to look at the finer details can be valuable, as they may often see errors or potential errors where others cannot.

These employees usually have the following qualities;

  • Demonstrated administrative or reporting experience.
  • An error-free, grammatically correct resume, and correspondence.
  • Effective ability to correct or guide others to complete processes the right way.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and organizational skills.

The following questions will help you assess how the candidate will react to various scenarios, including when a detail is missed and what mistakes can cost a business.

Examples of Attention to detail Questions

  1. Tell me about a time you had to investigate an error that was made in a department you worked in. What was the result?
  2. If you identify an error in another person's work, how would you broach that topic with the person?
  3. You are deciding on a process to implement with senior management to mitigate potential mistakes? 
  4. If you are provided with 2 documents, both written in English, and asked to check the spelling, grammar, and punctuation, could you complete that?
  5. What software have you previously worked with for compliance and process management?

How to Evaluate Candidates

  • Look for candidates who exhibit examples of real work experiences to back up their claims of being highly organized and detail focused.
  • Identify candidates who are naturally able to steer people to bring a better quality of work.
  • For senior-level and management candidates, look for improvements they’ve made in their previous department or company to back up their claims.
  • Identify candidates who can show independent validating and checking experience.
