Are you looking for someone who can fully utilize the technology available for your company? Time to hire an IT consultant!

You want to hire an IT consultant to analyze IT issues to implement new systems and infrastructure to fulfill the company’s business demands. They examine your current framework, set a project timeframe, and cooperate with your in-house tech team. 

IT consultant candidates can be experts in cybersecurity or database management, among others. You could conduct a test to evaluate their technical skills. Look for people with portfolios that are relevant to your projects and company size.

You need to keep a lookout for the candidates’ credentials, ensuring that they are up-to-date.  Also, don’t forget to keep an eye out for candidates who have good communication skills, are team players, and are quick thinkers.

Operational and Situational questions

  • When assessing a company’s IT infrastructure, how do you conclude its requirements?
  • Before starting a project, where do you start first?
  • How do you determine a project is a success?
  • How do you communicate with people who are not tech-savvy?
  • A client said they’re dealing with a virus infection and asking for your assistance, what steps do you take?
  • You’re recommending a client that will be great for them, but they say no. How would you convince them?
  • If a client received a suggestion from a third party and wants to install a new system. Based on your knowledge, how do you determine if it’s the best decision?

Role-specific questions

  • What qualifies you to work as an IT consultant?
  • Have you ever worked on an app development project?
  • What is your White box testing experience?
  • Have you worked with businesses of this size before?
  • Are you familiar with Oracle?
  • We use [insert software] in this company. Have you worked with it before?
  • How do you keep things private?
  • How do you keep up with technological advancements?
  • Do you have any experience with Java, C++, Python, or other programming languages?

Behavioral questions

  • Tell me about your biggest IT consulting success. What was the nature of your project?
  • Consider a time when it was difficult to get employees to comprehend a system. What was the issue, and what did you do about it?
  • Give me an example of an issue you solved that greatly benefited your client.
  • How do you keep on track while you're working on many projects with tight deadlines?
  • Have you assisted in the setup of network infrastructure? What obstacles did you face and how did you overcome them?

Conclusion

Candidates for IT consultants should have strong interpersonal skills and be well-organized when being interviewed. Candidates that do not think imaginatively about technology will struggle to communicate effectively.
