Analytics Managers apply various strategies and tool implementation to assist companies with translating raw data into helpful and insightful business information. This data could be external market metrics (benchmark reports) and/or internal performance, risk, and other internal data. 

When interviewing an analytics manager, it is imperative that you asses their analysis, data gathering, and technical skills. Analytics Managers should be adept with data analysis techniques and be able to provide examples of their use in their careers to date. They should also demonstrate strong research and independent working abilities.

Role Specific Questions

  • Tell me about your previous experience in Data Analytics.
  • What database/data analysis software have you used in your previous roles? Do you have experience with Tableau or SAS?
  • How do you organize data, specifically onto spreadsheets, to get a clear picture of performance metrics for various departments? What would be the first report you would run?
  • What procedures would you implement to ensure the security of confidential information?
  • How would you work to avoid selection bias? Where have you faced this previously?
  • What experience do you have creating data models? Can you provide a detailed guide on how you did it?
  • What model would you choose for forecasting sales and financial information?

Behavioral Questions

  • When presenting or explaining performance metrics, how would you ensure that a non-technical audience understands the key points?
  • What do you do to stay up to date with industry trends and best practices?
  • What is the most challenging database problem you have faced so far? Can you tell me how you solved the problem?

Conclusion

Most Analyst Managers will be able to provide comprehensive answers and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of these subject matter questions. Look for answers using the star method, and identify where persons are using specific examples from their previous roles/experience to demonstrate their working knowledge.
