Interview Questions to Hire HR Consultant

HR Consultants usually work with businesses on a contract basis for various reasons, although some HR consultants work directly for businesses. HR consultants help businesses to develop, implement and incentivize processes and procedures in their HR departments. They also review, analyze and change existing processes, along with ensuring complete overhauls when required. They work to ensure a business is compliant and are subject matter experts in Human Resources.

When interviewing an HR consultant, you should keep looking for someone with at least a Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources or a related field. In addition to that, someone who is CIPD certified indicates a high-quality candidate. They should provide demonstrated knowledge of HR best practices, and have the ability to review, analyze and change processes and procedures.

Role Specific Questions

  • What has been your biggest challenge when implementing new HR systems in a business?
  • How have you gotten management and senior stakeholders on board with new initiatives you have developed?
  • What do you know about data protection and confidentiality guidelines?
  • What are the key functions and accountabilities of the HR department?
  • If you are in a position where a new policy or initiative is receiving pushback from line managers and front-line staff members, what action would you take to resolve it?
  • How would you take steps to ensure that the HR department is compliant with the industry guidelines and best practices?
  • If a company did not have a disciplinary procedure in place, what steps would it take to implement a robust system?
  • Why is it important to ensure HR team members are aware of data protection and safeguarding guidelines?
  • How do you monitor the effectiveness of a new system or processes you have implemented?

Behavioral Questions

  • How do you keep up to date with HR industry best practices?
  • Describe a time you had to maintain confidentiality.
  • Tell me about a time you had to remain professional in an upsetting or difficult situation.

Conclusion

Most HR Consultants will be able to provide comprehensive answers and demonstrate in-depth knowledge of these subject matter questions. Look for answers using the star method, and identify where persons are using specific examples from their previous roles/experience to demonstrate their working knowledge.
