Job brief
Working under the supervision of an anesthesiologist or physician, the Nurse Anesthetist is responsible for ensuring the safe administration of pain medication (anesthesia) care for patients before, during, and after surgery. Other core responsibilities include providing pain management, stabilization services, and overseeing patients' recovery. This role requires strong attention to detail, strong critical thinking skills, and a compassionate approach to patient care.
Responsibilities
- Review patients' histories for any allergies or illnesses that would affect anesthesia.
- Evaluate and prep patients for anesthesia, including information about surgery and recovery, as well as the potential side effects of anesthesia.
- Determine the type and amount of anesthesia needed for the patient in addition to the best way to administer it.
- Prepare and distribute the proper dose of anesthesia.
- Evaluate patients' progress before, during, and after medical procedures.
- Monitor patients' vital signs and their dose of anesthesia during medical/surgical procedures.
- Oversee patients' safety and wellbeing during anesthesia recovery.
- Perform some administrative activities, including but not limited to ordering anesthesia, training new staff, and overseeing department finances.
Requirements
- Master's degree in nursing with 1 year of nursing experience
- Registered Nursing License and a willingness to recertify every two years
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills
- Compassion when dealing with patients with an empathetic approach
- Detail-oriented and driven by excellence and safety.
